Golf Tips - The Short Lob Shot

ike the the Chip Shot, this is a “must have” skill for any player.  However, it is especially important for higher handicap players to master this shot because they tend to miss, or come up short of, more greens.

Like Chipping and Putting, a professional can teach the basics, but only practice, practice, and more practice can give a player the feel for the shot.

Remember!

bullet

Since the margin of error on this shot is small, this is a shot that should only be used if you have no alternative.

bullet

This is the shot to use when you have to go over trouble and there is not much green between you and the pin. However, always remember the primary objective is to get the ball on the green.

bullet

Don’t be a hero! Don’t try to finesse the shot and get close to the pin.

bullet

This NOT a shot that can be used with all types of lie.
bullet

With a tight lie the back of the club may bounce on the ground and cause a very thinly struck shot. The higher the loft of the club the greater the risk of this occurring.

bullet

With a very 'fluffy' lie the club may slide underneath the ball, resulting in a much shorter shot than anticipated.

Club Selection

When less run is desired, use a more lofted clubs, e.g. Pitching Wedge or Gap Wedge and maybe Sand Wedge or even Lob Wedge.

Grip

Lay the club on the ground with the club face open and then take your normal grip.

DO NOT not grip the club and then try to open the club face as illustrated here.

Stance

Open stance

Ball in center of stance

Weight more towards the front foot

Hands ahead of the ball

Swing

In order to achieve the required flight distance, the extra loft of the clubs used for the Short Lob Shot require a fuller swing than the Chip Shot. "Think Vee to Vee."

bullet

Full shoulder turn, with weight moving to back foot

bullet

Full wrist cock

bullet

Hands stay ahead of the ball, with weight shift toward the front foot. Club head accelerates through the ball causing it to come up quickly.

bullet

Note how the club moves ahead of the ball.

Follow through, finally ending in a full extension (not shown in this picture).

Practice

Once the basics have been learned, always practice from various lies. Only practice and more practice can teach you a 'feel' for this type of shot. Try tight lies and fluffy lies and learn the dangers involved in trying from these situations. Remember, the Short Lob Shot is rarely played from a 'good' lie!
